"I found the way the people from City Hall negotiated to be disrespectful"

The first ones to leave were going to get a three-bedroom apartment. But afterwards, all residents who were being disappropriated would leave with an apartment and the extra value in money, you know? This was in 2015. This was the case for everyone. No one left there after that without getting two, three apartments and 400,000, 600,000, 700,000 reals. While people were receiving compensation for spaces of one metre, two metres squares, it was absurd, for a huge house, down below it was my sister, above it was me and my son, but we received an apartment. An apartment each.

I am preparing to sue them. I am going to ask for the worth of the house below and mine above. I started to negotiate. In 2014, they gave us the apartments. But the negotiations stopped, they said they had to measure things to evaluate it, four or five times, and they didn’t come, not even once. The last time they were going to come was in April 2015, the judge set a day for them to come, I waited and they didn’t come I went back there again to City Hall, they set another date and again they didn’t come.

I think it’s a lack of respect on their part, City Hall’s, negotiating like that.

You feel it in the moment, something which takes you 10,12 years to build takes ten minutes for them to knock down. The situation is a pain, but life goes on, doesn’t it?

[Do you miss Vila Autodromo?]

No. Not at all. It’s very different, my quality of life is a lot better here than it was there. There, you didn’t have any paving, it was just bare earth. Here it’s not like that, there are no mosquitos, no mud. Everything depends on how you live, for some, anywhere is good, but without proper roads it’s difficult. We had to fight our whole lives to get it modernised. You couldn’t live because there was that pressure that you might have leave, every year it was there, you couldn’t do anything you wanted to do. You couldn’t build what you wanted to because of this pressure. The time comes when you have to decide to live, or suffer your whole life.
