"It was a house made out of a lot of sacrifices [...] When I moved there, it was still a hut, but with a lot of sacrifices, I made it into a house. So I did miss it"

Coming from

Now living in

My house was enormous. It had two bedrooms, a kitchen… it was an area of 100 square

metres.

[How long did you live there for?] 23 years. Me, my daughter, my son in law and my

grandchildren.

People from City Hall came there to talk to us, do the registration. I didn’t want to leave, but

they said I was in the designated area and I would have to negotiate. It was horrible.

[What did you feel?]

Ah, I don’t even know how to describe it to you. I cried a lot, because 23 years… it was a

whole life there.

[Did you get any compensation?]

I got some compensation which wasn’t enough to buy a house, so I went back to Vila

Autodromo and I bought a room, a kitchenette, in Nelson Piquet.

[Why are you staying here, in this container?]

Because I want to move into the new homes being built here.

[What do you remember about the old place?]

Ah, I lived through many happy moments there with my family. My garden, my chickens. It

was a house made out of a lot of sacrifices, I made that house to live in. I missed it. When I

moved there, it was still a hut, but with a lot of sacrifices, I made it into a house. So I did miss

it.
